(It also means there may be no difference between the two when being driven from an externally generated MIDI sequence, if that's one of your applications, even if there's a difference when played from their own actions.)ĭigital Pianos - Electronic Pianos - Synths &a. But the velocity curve adjustment might provide a suitable fix and also, if you find the sound good enough for live, it might be worth being aware that you can still "improve" its sound for home recording by possibly driving it from some other board you may have.

If you're gigging with a single board, all that matters is how it sounds from its own action, you don't have another one available to play it from. So to the people who report that a MOX(F) doesn't sound as good as a "real"Motif or S90XS played side by side, I'd really like to see someone run a MIDI cable out of the Motif/S90XS to the MOX(F) and play the MOX(F) form the better board's action and see if they still hear a difference.įrom a performance aspect, it is slightly moot. Now my test wasn't perfect: (a) it was a quick listen, and not extensive detailed comparison, and (b) the Rack XS might still be somehow a little different from the keyboard versions of the Motif. and I could pretty much address it by selecting the "soft" velocity curve, the relative "veil" if you will was lifted. I then tried driving the Rack XS from the MOX8, and I couldn't hear a difference between the internal and external sounds! My conclusion: there was little, if any difference in the sonics between the "real" Motif Rack XS and the MOX, that the perceived difference was probably a matter of the velocity curve of the action you were driving them from.

I've heard a couple of people mention this, but I have suggested a test that I haven't seen anyone try.Īs background: I was using a Motif Rack XS (which should have the "real" Motif electronics in it) controlled from an 88 Casio, along side a MOX8. I remember trying the MOX alongside a Motif, and finding that the Motif sounded noticeably better, despite having supposedly identical sounds.
